Amina Sheik Mohamed: Health equity, cultural awareness, and belonging are key to well-being
Amina Sheik Mohamed is a dedicated advocate for health equity and cultural inclusivity. Her incredible work led her to be awarded one of Prebys Foundation’s inaugural Leadership Awards. As the Founder and Director of the Refugee Health Unit at UC San Diego, Amina has been instrumental in championing initiatives that empower immigrant communities in San Diego County. In this episode, she joins host Grant Oliphant to explore the intricate connections between community health and cultural identity.

GUEST POET DR. ANGÉLICA M. YAÑEZ
Dr. Angélica M. Yañez is a professor, poet, and dedicated advocate for Indigenous wisdom and cultural education. She holds a doctoral degree in Ethnic Studies from UC San Diego and is an advisor to several student groups such as M.E.Ch.A and a spoken word and writing group on her college campus. A traditional Aztec Dancer, she honors the legacies of her Indigenous ancestors through dance and ceremony, bridging educational and cultural spaces with her work.
As the founder of The Ancestral Teachings Institute, a digital platform for cultural education and Indigenous wisdom, Angélica is deeply committed to preserving and sharing ancestral knowledge. Her poetry has appeared in Latina: Struggles and Protests in 21st Century USA, Volume 2, LitStack, Sunshine/Noir III, The San Diego Poetry Annual, Flowersong Press, and Writing in a Woman’s Voice, and has been featured by Planned Parenthood.

He is the author of more than twenty books and three hundred articles that range across social ethics, philosophy, theology, political economics, social and political theory, religious history, cultural criticism, and intellectual history. He is the recipient of many awards including the Grawemeyer Award in 2017 for his book The New Abolition: W. E. B. Du Bois and the Black Social Gospel. His latest book is Over from Union Road My Christian-Left-Intellectual Life.
