AN ACTIVIST SPEAKS OUT
Guest Valerie Traina
Valerie has been an activist for more than 40 years. Brooklyn-born, she moved to San Diego ten years ago with her husband. She first became active as an animal rights advocate and has within the past several years been active in movements for women’s reproductive rights and inclusivity in public schools. Valerie is an active volunteer with Defense of Democracy, a grassroots, nonpartisan nonprofit dedicated to protecting the rights of public school students, teachers and librarians. Those rights include the freedom to learn all our history and to be respected as the authentic people we are as regards our ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, skin color and other immutable characteristics. She works closely with animal rights groups Strategic Action for Animals, Kind Heart Coalition, Direct Action Everywhere and Los Angeles Alliance for Animals. Valerie wants everyone to know that it’s essential to the continuation of our democratic republic that you get active. We need YOU in protests, making phone calls to legislators, writing emails and letters to decision-makers. It’s not hard to become active. Once you invest some time in issues you’re passionate about, you’ll find you aren’t so overwhelmed because you took action to address a critical problem.
