President Franklin Delano Roosevelt (FDR) helped pull us out of The Great Depression, brought the nation the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) and Works Progress Administration (WPA) with jobs for millions of people, bought families help with the New Deal and left his footprint in San Diego’s beloved Balboa Park and more. Anne Hoiberg is in conversation with Arthur and Mike and Arthur about the presence of FDR and his administration in San Diego as part of the WPA.
Anne Hoiberg was born in Illinois, where she and her two siblings attended elementary and high school. After high school, Anne enrolled in Northern Illinois University, majoring in Education. Later, she moved to San Diego and enrolled in SDSU, earning a Master’s degree in Psychology. She accepted a position as a Research Psychologist with the Naval Health Research Center where she was employed for 25 years. During those years. Anne published two books and more than 150 articles in scientific publications.
Anne was also active in her community, beginning with membership and then the position as President of the San Diego Women’s Political Caucus. She recruited and trained women to run for elected office. Her membership in other nonprofit organizations led to her presidency in the United Nations Association (UNA-USA, SD), Women’s Museum of California, International Museum of Human Rights at San Diego, League of Women Voters of San Diego, and La Jolla Pen Women. She also serves as President of Boards of Directors of several local nonprofit organizations, e.g., Bilateral Safety Corridor Coalition, Nile Sisters Development Initiative, La Jolla Pen Women, and UNA-USA, SD. Since retiring, she has authored three books, including Tears of War, the stories of 37 refugee women. In 2021, Mayor Todd Gloria proclaimed August 31 as Anne Hoiberg Women’s Rights Day.
